iPhone camera blurry, spotty or black: causes and solutions

For many people the camera is the most important part of their phone, so it is all the more annoying when photos suddenly turn blurry, show spots or the camera app only delivers a black image. The good news: not every symptom means an expensive defect. Here is the overview.

Blurry photos: clean first, then test

It sounds trivial, but it is the most common cause: a smudged or scratched lens cover. Clean the camera glass with a microfibre cloth and test again. If it stays blurry, check whether the autofocus is working: tap on different subjects in the camera app. If the image pumps in and out or stays permanently soft, the focus unit (OIS) is usually damaged, typically after drops or vibrations, for example from a motorbike or bicycle handlebar mount.

Spots and dots in the picture

Black dots that sit in the same place on every photo are almost always dust or moisture BETWEEN the lens and the sensor, so cleaning the outside will not help. After a crack in the camera glass, particles also work their way into the module. This is a job for the workshop: with a camera repair, the module is cleaned or replaced, with a fixed price after the diagnosis.

Camera stays black

If the camera app only shows black, test step by step: switch between front and rear camera (does one side work?), restart the device, open another app with camera access. If no camera works despite a restart, the camera module's connection is usually affected, often after a drop. The workshop can often fix the loose ribbon cable quickly.

Shaky image and rattling when focusing

A visibly shaking image or a buzzing sound from the camera points to damaged optical image stabilisation. The module can be replaced, far cheaper than a new device.

Repair or switch devices?

A camera repair is almost always worth it if the device is otherwise in good shape. If other issues pile up (weak battery, old model with no update future), do the honest maths: a tested refurbished device with a 1-year warranty often costs less than two major repairs on the old device, and you can sell your current device to us despite the camera defect.
