Buying a used phone without a flop: the warning signs

Classified ad platforms hide locked devices, faked serial numbers and batteries at the end of their life. How to spot a risk and which checks you should never skip.

Buying a used phone privately can work out well. It can also mean you are holding a device that cannot be activated or has been reported stolen. The difference lies in a few checks that take ten minutes.

Warning signs that should make you walk away

  • The device is not set up, or is handed over without a lock code and cannot be started fully. Then there is nothing you can check.
  • The seller insists on payment in advance and shipping. With private offers and no buyer protection, that is the most common scam.
  • The serial number in the device does not match the one on the box. A clear sign of an assembled or swapped device.
  • The price is far below the market level. With phones there are no bargains without a reason.
  • The seller pushes for haste. Time pressure is a sales trick, not a coincidence.

The checks you absolutely must do

  1. Activation lock: The device must be fully reset and signed out of the previous owner's account. If it starts into initial setup and asks for someone else's credentials, it is worthless to you. How that is done properly is described in our article on the activation lock.
  2. Battery health: Read it in the settings. Below 80 percent you have to factor in a battery replacement.
  3. Test all cameras, speakers, microphones and buttons. A short video with sound reveals a lot.
  4. Check the display for dead zones: run a finger once across the whole surface.
  5. Moisture indicator and gaps: An uneven gap between display and frame points to the device having been opened before.

Why buying tested works differently

The difference between a private purchase and a refurbished device is not the condition, but who carries the risk. With us, every device goes through a standardised diagnosis, see PhoneCheck explained, the origin is documented, and you get one year of warranty plus a 14-day return right. If something is wrong, it is not your problem. That is exactly what you pay the premium over the classified ad for.

There is more on the topic in our guide Buying a used phone in Switzerland and on the page Buying used safely.

Conclusion

If you buy privately: only in person, only with a fully reset device, and take the ten minutes for the checklist. If that is too much risk for you, buy tested. The price difference is smaller than most people think, and you get a warranty and a return right on top.

Frequently asked questions

What is the activation lock?
An anti-theft feature. If the device is still linked to the previous owner's account, it cannot be activated after a reset and is unusable for you.
How do I spot a device that has been opened before?
By uneven gaps between display and frame, by scratches around the screws, and by the edge of the display lifting slightly.
Is a very cheap offer always a scam?
Not always, but a price clearly below the market almost always has a reason. Ask specific questions and have the device shown to you in working order.
What do I get on top when buying tested?
A standardised functional diagnosis, documented origin, one year of warranty and a 14-day return right. The risk does not sit with you.
